Facebook account reactivated, whew, + moral of the story…

Posted on June 3, 2008 by No Comments

I just found out a few minutes ago my beloved Facebook account has finally been reactivated after a brush with near extinction. I posted an entry on this topic not long ago but in a nutshell: my account was disabled because I was adding friends too fast.

Moral of the story: personal opinion regarding what’s “proper” and what’s “not” on your favorite social networks doesn’t matter one inkling. All that really matters is the interpretation of your actions by the powers that be, and in this case, by Facebook.

I had a sneaky suspicion that my account would only be down for a short time since the nature in which I was deactivated didn’t entail anything malicious or ill-advised but nevertheless I took note of an important point . . . if I want to continue to use my favorite social networks it’s important to understand that I’m only a user of the service and nothing more. My actions should be considered based on how others may interpret them and not based on what I might feel is acceptable.

I was pretty much deactivated and warned by Facebook for adding friends too quickly. Arguably, the whole point of the site is to add friends & network but if you’re catching my drift here in this blog entry then you’ll realize there is no “arguably.” What Facebook says, or any other social network for that matter says, is what goes.

Whether or not my account was going to be reactivated was a mystery until now and to be honest, I wasn’t sure how that would turn out since it was my first experience dealing with Facebook support.

I guess it’s pointless in saying but I will anyways, lesson learned. In the future I’ll be a little more thoughtful and wary of trying to “network” too much on social networks. As goofy as that sounds, it’s something we should all keep in mind.

I’m glad to be back on Facebook and looking forward to picking up where I left off. I guess my new policy will be to let people find me versus aggressively seeking other like-minded folks.

Facebook is careful in releasing information that reveals how they detect & handle issues such as these but I will say this… I wasn’t doing anything malicious, spammy, or too over the top by any means.

I’ve learned that these social networks aren’t big fans of doing anything in a repetitive manner, such as sending the same “welcome” message to multiple friends or followers, or adding friends quickly with the same “add me” message… even if you’re doing it manually the way that was intended.
